FAQ
Yes it is. Rock & Sun provides financial protection resulting from any failure of Rock & Sun or of any of our suppliers. When you book your course or holiday with Rock & Sun, your money goes into a non-trading account which we do not access until after you have returned from your climbing trip and all the suppliers have been paid. This means that should Rock & Sun cease to trade due to bankruptcy, your money is protected and you will get your money back. With Rock & Sun your money is in safe hands!
Rock & Sun does not cancel and does not use waiting lists
At Rock & Sun you can book your climbing holiday with confidence knowing that it will go ahead. As a policy, we do not work with waiting lists or a minimum number of participants. With Rock & Sun, you can book any available climbing holiday you find on our website and once you have received our booking confirmation, you can book your flights knowing that we will not cancel your holiday. We have developed our reliable reputation by running all of our booked holidays, even if it only has one booking. This is to give our customers peace of mind and confidence in booking a holiday with us. Rock & Sun have happily used this policy since 2013 and will continue to do so.
No experience is needed to climb with Rock & Sun. If you are new to climbing then do the Introduction to Rock Climbing course or book a day of Private Guiding in the UK. Another very popular trip amongst those with little climbing experience is the long climbing weekend in the Costa Blanca! If you are unsure which is the best course or holiday for you then please get in touch and we will find the best course or holiday to suit your experience and abilities.
You are more than welcome to come on a climbing course or holiday by yourself. In fact, most of our clients are solo travellers. If your climbing partners can’t take time off work, or if they for other reasons can’t or don’t want to go on a climbing trip when you do, then just come on a Rock & Sun holiday and climb with us!
Yes you can. Accommodation is included in Rock & Sun courses and holidays abroad. If you come on a trip by yourself, we expect you to share a room with someone from the same gender as you (maximum of 2 people per room). If you prefer to have a room to yourself, then simply add the single room supplement to your online booking (subject to availability).
The majority of you don’t just come and do one thing with us – you come back for more! We love that. It means we must be doing something right – or a lot right! But we also love it because we’ve got to know some of you so well.
We have therefore set up a Loyalty Discount Scheme. Simplicity is the name of the game here:
In any 12 month period of booking 1 holiday or course:
– you will get 5% discount on the second holiday or course
– you will get 10% discount on the third holiday or course
– you will get 10% discount on the fourth holiday or course in that twelve month period – and on all subsequent holidays or courses – for ever and ever!
To qualify for discounts on your 2nd, 3rd or 4th Rock & Sun climbing course or holiday, your purchase dates must fall within a twelve month period. It doesn’t matter if the course or holiday you book falls outside this period. Please remember – it’s up to you to claim your discount – we are unable to issue it retrospectively.
The Loyalty Discount is given to you on an individual basis and does therefore not apply to a second or third person on your booking. Read more

Yes, for most of our holidays and courses outside the UK, airport transfers are included in the package price (except for Kalymnos). All you need to do is book a flight within the free transfer hours. When you arrive at the airport in your destination country, your instructor or a taxi driver will be there to pick you up and take you to your accommodation. For suggested arrival and departure times, please refer to our Enquiry Packs or Contact us for more information.
We recommend bringing two pairs of climbing shoes when going on a climbing holiday. If you have only one pair, and you are coming on a Climbing Holiday in the Costa Blanca or on Kalymnos, then we do not recommend buying a second pair of climbing shoes before the trip. Please bring your current climbing shoes with you and you can discuss with the instructors there how they feel and how they perform on the rock. They will be able to give you advice on what you should look for in a second pair of climbing shoes. In the Costa Blanca, we have many different brands and models of shoes you can rent at the villa so you can experience the difference and find out what works for you. From there you can make an informed decision of which new shoes to buy. On Kalymnos, the instructors can not provide a range of rental shoes, but there are many climbing stores that sell different climbing shoe brands and models. Your instructor will offer to go to the shoe store with you to help you choose the best climbing shoe for you.
For more information on climbing shoes, specifically for outdoor climbing, please read this blog.
When booking a Rock & Sun climbing holiday in the Costa Blanca you can rent a helmet, harness and climbing shoes from us. TIP: by renting these items from us you can save money on your flight´s luggage fees. It can also come in handy if you are on a longer trip through Europe and don´t want to carry your climbing equipment with you all that time. Climbing shoes: €25/week, €20/weekend. Climbing harness: €10/week, €5/weekend. Climbing helmet: €10/week, €5/weekend.
In our other popular destinations, Kalymnos and Thailand we have a small number of rental harnesses and helmets available. Please contact us if you would like to rent climbing kit in these locations.
No, flights are not included in the package price. Included in our holidays and courses outside the UK are: airport transfers, all transport to and from the crags during the week, accommodation, guiding with a fully qualified climbing instructor/coach, and use of climbing equipment.
Yes we can. We will share what we’ve learnt from booking flights all over the world on a regular basis.
We have found that the more often you search for flights on one specific device, the more the price will go up. You can save money by doing all your searching and comparing on one device, make a decision on which flight you are going to buy, and then use a different device to make the booking.
When booking a long haul flight, to Thailand for instance, it can work out a lot cheaper to take an indirect flight.
When travelling to Alicante from a non-European destination, it is worth considering to have a stop-over in London, Madrid or Barcelona. Those cities have big international airports that are served by many airlines for long-haul flights, whereas Alicante is not. From London, Madrid or Barcelona there are many low cost airlines that fly to Alicante.
More and more people would like to reduce the environmental impact of their lifestyles. Some people become vegetarian or vegan, some choose to consume less and/or to consume biological/ecological products, and some people choose to reduce the number of flights they get on a year. Luckily this decision does not have to impact your climbing holidays! Many of Rock & Sun’s climbing holidays and bouldering trips can be travelled to easily and comfortably by train. Read how to get to Alicante by rail to go on a Sport Climbing Holiday or Performance Coaching Course in the Costa Blanca. Read how to get to Valencia for a bouldering trip in Albarracin. Read here how to get to Marseille to enjoy a climbing holiday in ‘La Douce France’ Orpierre.
Yes, you will need insurance that covers you for rock climbing. When buying travel insurance for a rock climbing / extreme sports holiday, it can be hard to find a policy that covers you for everything. At Rock & Sun we have for many years directed people to Protectivity Insurance – because they have time and again proven themselves to provide the best rock climbing insurance that we’ve come across. Whether you’re on a rock climbing holiday in Europe or the rest of the world, Protectivity Insurance can provide you with a dependable travel and sport insurance package.
At Rock & Sun we welcome climbers of all ages. We have worked with children as young as 4 years old, and also with climbers well into their 70s.
At Rock & Sun we do not ask our climbing guides to take on the responsibility of working with unaccompanied children. Children under 18 years old need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times, so they can understand and consent to the risks involved with the activity of outdoor climbing.
Children aged 13 to 18 can join our UK climbing courses, Bouldering trips and Costa Blanca long weekends and Sport Climbing Holidays providing their parent or guardian is present at all times.
“Any unaccompanied minors that come to the attention of the authorities (for instance when in hospital) are judged to be vulnerable and may be taken into a minors centre until a parent or guardian can be found.” (UK Foreign Office)
You will not get a certificate after joining a Rock & Sun course or holiday. However, what you learn on Rock & Sun courses and holidays will obviously build your knowledge and confidence in the key disciplines of rock climbing. If you are unsure which is the best course or holiday for you then please get in touch and we will find the best course or holiday to suit your experience and abilities.
Brexit: Travelling to Europe as a UK citizen
ETIAS: ETIAS is currently not yet in operation. It is expected that from mid-2025 UK citizens travelling to Europe are required to have a valid ETIAS travel authorisation (valid for three years). UK citizens will have to apply by filling in a form and paying a fee of £7 – the procedure will only take a few minutes. For more information, please go to: ETIAS – European Union (europa.eu)
Passport: If you’re a UK citizen travelling to the EU from 1st January 2021, your passport will need to be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left) and it will need to have at least 6 months left validity. If your passport is burgundy or has ‘European Union’ on the cover, you can continue to use it until it expires. To check the requirements for different countries, please follow this link: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport
Driving Licence: Rock & Sun offers free airport transfers and transport to and from the crags during your course/holiday in Europe. Should you however choose to rent your own vehicle, then please be informed that from January 1st 2021, some EU countries will insist on British citizens having an International Driving Permit. Full details about International Driving Permits, including what permit you need for each country can be found by clicking here: https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit. If required, International Driving Permits cost £5.50 and are available directly from the Post Office.
Travel Insurance: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows any EU citizen to access state medical care when they are travelling in another EU country. For British citizens, the EHIC will no longer be valid from January 1st 2021. The UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC) replaces the EHIC. A UK GHIC is free of charge. More info.
Rock & Sun has always advised that when travelling in the EU and beyond, it is important to take out travel insurance and check that it covers their current circumstances, including any medical conditions. Please make sure you check the Terms and Conditions and contact your insurance provider if you’re not sure.
Mobile Data Roaming: Under EU rules, the cost of making calls, sending messages or using the internet on your phone in the EU is the same as in the UK. If the UK leaves without a deal these rules will no longer apply – however, some UK companies have said they may continue to offer this benefit to their customers. Please check with your mobile phone provider about the costs of using your phone in the EU. A new law means that you’re protected from getting mobile data charges above £45 without you knowing. Once you reach £45, you need to opt in to spend more so that you can continue using the internet while you’re abroad. Your phone operator will tell how you can do this.
