Rock Climbing in the Wye Valley

The Wye Valley's easy access being close to motorway links, makes it a convenient location for a climbing weekend. With direct inroads from the M4 its the closest climbing to London with many crags only minutes from the road. Not only is the Wye Valley very conveniently located, it also offers many different opportunities for improving your climbing skills. There are many sport climbing routes in the area's former quarries. And there are trad climbing routes at Symonds Yat and Wintours Leap. These crags also offer multi-pitch climbs as well. Besides learning all the necessary skills for becoming an independent sport or trad climber, the Wye Valley is also a good place to work with one of Rock & Sun's climbing coaches instructor on improving your climbing technique or to send your project. There are numerous interesting and exciting climbs, including many starred routes of the highest quality.

Wintours Leap

Wintours Leap is an especially good crag that lends itself for single as well as multi-pitch trad climbing. At the top of the climbs you'll get panoramic views across the valley and the River Wye. Beautiful, lush scenery in all directions.

Symonds Yat

Symonds Yat is famous for the river rapids and a free standing pinnacle of which an ascent is a must. Its location in the forest makes it a nice and cool place to climb in the summer. Both Intro Rock Climbing Weekends and Learn to Lead Trad Courses will usually spend one day at Symonds Yat as it is ideal for an adventure day, abseiling in and climbing routes of all grades. It’s one of those places that the more you get to know it the better it becomes.

Wyndcliff

Wyndcliff has both sport climbing and traditional climbing making it a popular place in the Wye Valley. Its south facing wall makes it a real sun trap which is ideal for those cool spring and autumn days, as well as on drizzly days as the walls dry up quickly in the sun.

It's an excellent area to learn trad climbing and sport climbing - on limestone cliffs with cover from the trees, and generally friendly anchor points.

All in all, the Wye Valley is a very good climbing area with lots of variety.
