Amber Thornton was introduced to climbing at a small indoor wall, and shortly after, to trad climbing on the Cornish sea cliffs. After a few years she began to teach children and adults at the climbing wall, finding the challenge and satisfaction of sharing the sport to be inspiring.
This might have been it, had she not gone for a week’s bouldering trip to Fontainebleau in 2012. She fell in love with the way of life and a new type of climbing, and skipped the return ferry to stay an extra week. Since that trip, and since finding a fellow bouldering enthusiast in Sam, they have spent most of their time exploring the forest, as well as embracing the French and ‘Bleau’ lifestyle.
She has now climbed up to Font 7a+, and hopes to keeping pushing, although she has found that routes of any grade can be a challenge in Fontainebleau.
A background in conservation biology has given her an added dimension of interest in the area and sustainability of the sport, as well as, you know, bugs and stuff.
When not in Font, Amber enjoys climbing in new and old spots throughout Europe, be it slate bouldering in Cornwall or limestone sport in Slovenia, living on the road, walking, surfing and competition bouldering when back in the UK.

The bouldering weekend far exceeded my expectations…
The second factor was Fontainebleau itself. It’s quite something when you visit for the first time; almost ‘other worldly’ and our Rock & Sun trainers knew where to go to get the most out of the time we had. It also helped that it was a gorgeous weekend.
I would recommend Rock & Sun to anyone, beginner or not; the bouldering is endlessly variable.
Finally, I was fortunate to be with such a nice group with the perfect mix of know how. Well done Rock & Sun....brilliant!
